Keep US Military Bases off Africa! Moscow, 10 Dec. 2007 Our attention has been drawn to some recent media publications on the intense pressure being brought upon our President, Alhaji Umar Musa Yar'Adua of Nigeria by the US President George W. Bush and his administration in connection with the United States’ plan to station one of their military bases on the shores of our Nation. It is also being reported that the proposed visit of President Yar'Adua to the United States at the instance of President Bush is part of the manoeuvre to coerce the Nigerian President into accepting the militarization of the West African coast. The entire members of the Russian Chapter of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organization Europe (NIDOE Russia), categorically oppose and condemn any such move by the American Administration. President Yar’Adua and his administration have demonstrated fortitude and great political wisdom in their outright rejection of any American military base in our domain. We solidly support this undoubtedly patriotic act of our President and the National Assembly in their resolve to resist any establishment of United States African Command (US AFRICOM) in any place near our borders. We also commend the position of other African countries (with the exception of Liberia) that have equally taken a stand against this American proposal. We urge all Nigerians to give President Yar'Adua all the backing he needs in this trying period. In spite of our present national political predicament, our President cannot be, and must not be blackmailed, into acquiescing in any pact, military or strategic, inimical to the unity, stability and integrity of the Nation. The overwhelming presence of American military outposts in virtually all the regions of the world has contributed immensely to the worsening of international relations and aggravation of global tension. Furthermore, unsolicited foreign military presence in any country, impoverishes and enslaves the people, maims and robs them of their national sovereignty, destroys life and property. To this effect, a reference to the pathetic situation of the people in the Middle East and the former Yugoslavia in Central Europe should suffice. NIDOE Russia believes that Nigeria and the African continent must be kept free of any foreign military bases. It is a generational obligation of all Nigerians, in fact, of all Africans, to resist and obstruct with our might this blatantly dangerous scheme.
